FAQ's

What is the advantage of composting in this over the 3 tiered Kitchen Composter or the Leave-it Pot system?

In the 3 tiered Kitchen Composter or the Leave-it Pot system, there is a lot more manual stirring and shifting of units that can be labour intensive, when you have to manage large volumes of organic waste.

In the Manthan, the rotating tank does the homogenization and aeration of composting. So you are not manually stirring the contents.

The Manthan does not use electricity, is weatherproof, can be kept out in the heavy rains, is not fixed, can be moved, is easy to install. The Manthan is never filled more than half mark, this means that there is enough oxygen always in the tank, which is allowed in through holes on the top. This allows decomposition to happen in the presence of oxygen. Mixing fresh kitchen waste with dried leaves and sawdust further creates the optimum conditions for composting.

Where is it best suited for?

Ideally this product is good for volumes of waste in the range of 15-200 kgs per day; where 1 Manthan can take 15kg per day and a group of Manthans can take upto 200 kg per day.

If you have more waste than that, you must consider other options in the market. There are powered machines and large tank options available.

For retrofitting in small apartment complexes, the Manthan is the ideal solution.

Have you installed this anywhere?

Yes in different places and yes, it works. It is easy to use in flats and schools and offices.

How much space does this take?

Each Manthan takes 4 feet x 4 feet area. You need an additional area of 4 feet x 2 feet for storing the half done and fully done compost. This you can do in sacks, or Leave-it Pots or a constructed pit.

Where do I have to place this product?

This is an outdoor product. It can be kept in open spaces and is weatherproof. It can be placed near the waste-sorting center if your building has that facility or in the basement, terrace or in a corner of the garden/landscaped area.

How many people are required to take care of this?

The Manthan requires one person to look after it every day. Two people are required once or twice a month when you remove the half done compost to put it into the pit or sacks or Leave-it Pot.

How much volume of waste can it handle per day?

Each Manthan can take up to 15 kgs of waste everyday. This will allow the half done compost to be removed once in 15 days.

What will happen if I add more than that?

If you add more than 15 kgs of waste everyday, you will have to remove the half done compost before 15 days since the tank will fill up faster and reach its capacity. A rule of thumb is, don’t fill the tank beyond the center rod.

Do I have to add dried leaves and sawdust – can I not just add dried leaves?

Adding sawdust with dried leaves creates a great composition that keeps the pile from compacting and lets air into the gaps.

Where can I get dried leaves and sawdust/cocopeat?

From us - you can buy all of these. Dried leaves are best got from you nearby park.

In flats or colonies does each home fill the tank or is it all collected by housekeeping?

There are different ways of doing this.

Some flats insist that each home dumps the organic waste into the composter. In other places, each home puts out two kinds of waste in different containers everyday. One is wet and the other is rejects. These two containers of waste are collected by the housekeeping. Organic waste is dumped into the composter and the rejects are sent to landfill. The dry waste is collected only once a week. This is taken by housekeeping and sorted at a central sorting center and then sold to recyclers.

Who maintains this product in flats or colonies?

Very often the watchman, the maali(gardener) and the housekeeping staff are trained to maintain this. Sometimes, two people are hired specifically to do this job.

Till what level can I fill the tank?

The rule of thumb is to fill it up till the middle rod. The empty half provides the space necessary for effective rotation of the composting matter and holds the air that helps decomposition.

How do we know when to take out the half done compost?

Once you reach the half mark, you must take out the half done compost. Even if you have added fresh waste that morning, you must rotate the tank 6 times and then wait till the evening and take the whole lot out.

This half-done compost will have different stages of material in it, the one you just put in the last day and the one you put in the first day. This mix will help faster decomposition and have no smell.

Why do we need to put the half done compost in Leave-it Pots?

The half done compost needs to mature for another 2 months before you can use it in the garden. It still has a lot of organic matter that needs to be fully decomposed. So you have to store this in a place where it can be aerated and kept moist. A pit or gunny sack will also be enough. The Leave-it Pots are elegant and easy to maintain.

there an alternative to the Leave it Pots?
Yes, you can use a pit – and put in the material from the Manthan when you remove it.

Do we have to strain or sieve the compost when it is done?

After 2.5 months you can remove the large bits and put it back into the fresh organic waste. This will act as an accelerator. The remaining lumpy pile you can use in the garden. Some gardeners prefer to sieve this, some don’t.

In another part of the website you have said plastic does not aerate the composting process, so isn’t this a plastic drum?

Yes, it is, but it rotates and has enough air inside. This makes all the difference.

Why can’t you have a handle to rotate this Manthan?

You can, but it makes the product more expensive. That will be the next development.

Can you transport these to my city?

No, it is best you make it there. Transportation and taxes make it more expensive to ship.

No, this is a safe way of dealing with organic kitchen waste.
It is a lot more hazardous to our health if we keep throwing waste out on the streets, in the drains, in our lakes and to the ‘landfills’.

When will I get compost?
3 months after you begin using the Manthan. The large bits like mango seeds, leaves, bones, twigs will not have fully disappeared in form. You can put this back into the manthan after sieving with the fresh waste. They will take 9 months to fully disappear.

How do we maintain the Manthan?

Wipe the surface of the tank everyday to ensure no waste is sitting on or around the lid. Also sweep well around this space.

This will keep the composter hygienic and clean.

The shaft should be oiled once a month atleast.

Remember not to overload your Manthan. Do not fill it more than the half way mark.

What do I do if it smells?
You have to add sawdust/cocopeat to make sure that the smell reduces. You also have to rotate it 20 times clockwise and 20 times anticlockwise.

When do I open the tank valve?
When you find that there is excess water retention, you open the valve and let out the leechate.
