Across India – especially urban India – more and more electronic gadgets and devices are entering our homes. They’ve become indispensable features of our lives – so much so that, if we can afford it, we often grab the latest one as soon as it comes on the market.

Our higher consumption rates are leading to increased e-waste in our society. And all too often that e-waste gets mixed into landfills, oozing out and creating a toxic sludge that seeps into our water system and the soil growing our fruits and vegetables.

India generated about 3 million tonnes (MT) of e-waste in 2019 and it’s expected to increase significantly in the coming years. What is e-waste? Simply put: it’s any electronic or electric waste (the e stands for both). While we may enjoy the pleasures of a well lit home and using our cell phones, it’s important to consider the entire lifecycle of these products, which are predominantly linear. Essentially, they go from cradle to grave – although there are some parts of most electric and electronic devices that can be recuperated and returned to the cradle.

There are many e-waste collectors in the informal sector who are willing to take your e-waste although they often prefer it if you save up a bunch of items to make it worth their while. They carefully take it apart and collect the components of value and properly dispose of the refuse. But before the e-waste collector can take your stuff, it’s important that you get to him in one piece – because if you don’t segregate properly there can be toxic consequences!
